If a late-term abortion is necessary, after 28 weeks, Virginia law required a doctor to certify -- joined by two other doctors -- that "the continuation of the pregnancy is likely to result in the death of the woman or substantially and irremediably impair the mental or physical health of the woman." The law also requires physicians to make "measures for life support for the product of such abortion" available if there is "any clearly visible evidence of viability" after an attempted abortion. The law at the time certainly didn't make life support optional for the aborted foetus if born alive. I have no idea what Northam was talking about. Do you have a full clip?
