Sto provando ubuntu 20.04 mate

Ho problemi con cups  per installare una HP

Pensavo di 

apt-get purge cups*

e poi reinstallarlo.

Ma nel caso purgerebbe pure  mate-core e mate-desktop

Stesso se provo con synaptic o se prima di purge

apt-get remove cups*

ed anche se

apt-get purge ( o remove) cups

C' è un modo per "purgare" cups senza eliminare mate-core ?

oppure se procedo eliminado anche mate-core e mate-desktop e poi li 
reinstallo cosa rischio ?
