Many deaths have occurred from heatstroke. The roads are strewn with the bodies of animals and birds killed by the fierce heat. Deaths have also occurred at Aliganj, in Rohilkand, where 150,000 pilgrims have assembled for an annual fair at the Temple of Mahabir. In spite of the heat, thousands of pilgrims are crawling on all fours on the journey to the temple as penance and prayers for future favors.
