For what it's worth, I recommend reading both The Mythical Man-Month and The Design of Design. Fred Brooks is (or now was) a perceptive and experienced guy, who also puts effort into his writing, and there is a lot of insight in what he has to say. Incidentally I recommend the later 20th Anniversary edition of MMM, mainly for the update of his comments in the earlier edition.
