This is essentially a gift to Hamas since their arms supplier, Iran, is under no similar constraint against arming Hamas and Hizbollah. A Muslim association in Canada has already applauded this motion. All members of the Conservative Party plus three Liberals opposed the motion. At least one of the Liberals, Anthony Housefather, who is Jewish, is openly wondering whether he belongs in the Liberal Party any more. The motion, put forward by the NDP, originally called for Canada to recognize the statehood of Palestine but, after a day of contentious debate, the Liberals watered down the motion considerably to say that the government should work towards a two-state solution that results from negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. Although the motion is technically non-binding, which means it is thought to be the right direction for the government to go but the government is not obligated to do so, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly has said it is clearly the way the government should go!
