Not a particularly well-defined fact. https://www.merriam-webster.com/wordplay/liberal-meaning-origin-history American's tend to think it means the opposite of conservative, when in Australia the right-wing party called itself the liberal party, because it was for free trade and against protecting Australian manufacturers from overseas competition.
