Guilty! Well, yeah, he was guilty due to the twist. The writers lacked the courage of their convictions. They might have chosen to write a decent script instead exploring the legal ramifications of "castle doctrine" and to whom it applies. But they went another way. Instead we got to explore whether the fact that rents have more than doubled is an affirmative defense to a murder charge, and with the twist, the script wouldn't even stick with that.
