I didn't know it came from an early type of regulated oven. I remember school science text books back in the sixties having diagrams of gas oven thermostats. I can't find it online but as I recall, it had a metal rod that expanded as the temperature increased, shutting off the gas flow. (I haven't had a gas oven for years.)
