Eisenhower put his influence behind the original version of the 1957 civil rights act - to no effect due to the southern-western filibuster - and was very unhappy to see it cut down to an ineffective shadow of itself. This hurt him in certain circles but as most of the virulent racists a this time supported the Democrats anyway, he didn't mind.
