Intel's real 32 bit processor was supposed to be the iAPX 432, with the x86 a rework of the 8080 as a stop gap. O think I have the preliminary data sheets around here someplace. They threw money at it for about 10 years and failed. It will be interesting to watch their RISC attempts.
