A lot of free NNTP servers are fly-by-night; they last only a few years before the person offering the service calls it quits (no blame on them; it's often a thankless job). Eternal September has been around since... 2009, it looks like (that's as far as the web.archive.org shows, anyway). Switching between newsservers isn't hard, but it's an annoyance that most people don't want to deal with. Going with Eternal September, you have some confidence that you won't have to switch to some new server in six months. You can't say that about a lot of the other free offerings.
