Modesitt, Jr. It's science fiction. The first three books follow the exploits of an operative that would do special operations to change governments at the behest of an arguably evil empire. He has a very interesting character arc where he ends up helping protect an independent colony from said empire -- the Ecolitans. He's kind of a "James Bond -- in space!".[*] [*] I know James Bond went to space in _Moonraker_, but this is a little further into the future. -- -c
