He wouldn't be the first, nor the last, actor to sign-up as Doctor Who 
solely to get a big-name TV series role on his CV and then quickly 
leave. Quitopher Etchedinstone did the same thing.

His leaving could (part)explain where there is going to be over a 
year's gap before the next season ... or the big gap could be the 
(part)reason why he is leaving.
