I'm not sure the internet, well social media, makes you dumb. I'd 
probably say that instead it's brutally highlighted how people are 
willing to believe things they see if they support what they already 
believe.

As an example, during Brexit a reason of why we should leave the EU was 
a ruling under something called the ECHR which was supposed to have said 
that someone couldn't be deported as they had a cat. Now you think that 
people would look at that and think that can't be true (it wasn't of 
course*) but I heard people who were anti-EU repeat it and how the EU 
were dictating our laws. The other problem with it, just because the E 
in ECHR stands for European doesn't mean it's part of the EU. The 
amusing part is the ECHR was described by Winston Churchill as one of 
his greatest achievements - you don't get much more British than that.

*The actually truth was that it was a guy from Colombia that had over 
stayed his visa as he'd met someone who he then ended up living with for 
several years and still did. The cat part was a very minor detail that 
was included to help demonstrate that they were in a committed long term 
relationship. In summing up the judge quipped that Colombia would be 
safe from the mouser.
