I learnt to always look down and check for snakes. We have only one venomous snake in Michigan: the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake. They live in wetlands and generally try to avoid humans. The two venomous spiders (black widow and brown recluse) are pretty rare and are only a problem if you go sticking your hands where you can't see.
