Emacs is an editor of files, not just a text editor. It doesn’t assume 
that the file content has to be broken up into lines.

Also, look at the ways the respective editors can be extended: the vi/vim 
family rely on some kind of simplistic “macro” language for simple 
extensions, while you have to resort to coding in C or like that for more 
complex add-ons. Whereas in Emacs, the same language (ELisp) can do both 
simple things and complex things.
