In the US, copyright requires some kind of new creation. A phone book's 
list of addresses and numbers can't be copyrighted. I've argued that the 
restoration of a movie to its original state can't be copyrighted, but I 
don't think there's been a definitive court ruling. A colorized version 
can be copyrighted.
