Spain defaulted on it's debt four times in the reign of Philip II 
alone,and again in the reign of his son.

It seems that the rich were able to avoid virtually all tax, and 
revenues suffered when productive Jewish and Muslim citizens were 
expelled from the country.

No parallels there, of course.

But Spain survived, and even kept its empire.
