I don't know if this stuck, but at one point, I think Wolverine told Kitty Pryde that he no longer smoked and that "that has Jeannie written all over it" - Jean Grey, powerful telepath team member, presumably doesn't like the smoke, and either deliberately made Wolverine a non-smoker, or else involuntarily radiated distaste from her mind to his.
