Correction: this never happens.

This is not the case. I have no interest in defending Apple, but I do
challenge bullshit when I see it.

No family with no previous history of buying smartphones buys the whole
family a new phone. 

But, ok, in this absurd scenario yes you probably would need to buy a new
charger for each phone. Now you have a charger you can use with your next
purchases in 2, 3 or more years. 

The net result with future purchases is fewer chargers required.

So what? Any rating of charger will work. You don't *have to* charge at
20W, especially overnight. 

As luck would have it and like you I have bought an ipad which did come
with a 20W charger so I can use that if I want. 

iphones also don't come with wireless chargers either. You should buy five
of them as well given you've paid for that feature.
