But if you're swiping >it at a bar... In my state, the purchaser presents ID, typically a driver's license, to purchase alchohol and cigarettes and other tobacco products, and marijuana too. The clerk or bartender records the driver's license number by scanning the barcode. That allows the lookup in the state database or extract of the state database made available for retail transactions, so yeah, the store or bar must be capturing any identifying information made available. I think they are required to in case of an audit for underage purchases. There's no more "just flash the ID and don't allow inspection". There's no anonymity in purchase transactions. With credit card purchases, the merchant could get identifying informatio as well.
