Turned out that the usb connection had been captured > by shotwell, who thought it had to handle the camera. I had the opposite problem - I was trying to import photos into digiKam and some file manager (Dolphin?) had already grabbed the USB session. Turned out that I needed to kill 'kiod5' which was the process that grabbed the port, and then digiKam worked. https://techpatterns.com/forums/about3009.html Theo
