Same confusion: "I always thought that every flavor of Linux came with gcc straight out of the box." Umm, no. gcc is needed to build many of the packages in the distro, but is not a run-time dependency. (Or, only a small part of gcc is: some programs dynamically depend on a "libgcc".) A non-programming end user, who just wants e-mail, web, word processing and games does not require gcc. A programming user not working in C doesn't need gcc either, unless their programming language depends on gcc. -- TXR Programming Language: http://nongnu.org/txr Cygnal: Cygwin Native Application Library: http://kylheku.com/cygnal Mastodon: @Kazinator@mstdn.ca
