Upcoming Contests - Things to Do

The CW portion of the CQ World Wide DX Contest is this weekend, beginning at 0000 UTC on Saturday, November 23 and concluding at 2359 UTC on Sunday, November 24. The exchange is your signal report plus your CQ zone (i.e., "599 08"). If you're unsure of what your CQ zone is, you can find it by using this map [ https://cqww.com/resources.htm ] . Full rules for the event are available at www.cqww.com/rules.htm [ https://cqww.com/rules.htm ] .

Another upcoming event for CW enthusiasts is the ARRL 160-Meter Contest, which occurs the weekend of December 6 - 8, 2024. Amateurs worldwide exchange information with stations in the United States (and it's territories) and Canada using CW on the 160-meter band. Rules are available at www.arrl.org/160-meter [ https://www.arrl.org/160-meter?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL ] .

Bulletins

FT Challenge Debuts on December 7 - 8

The first FT Challenge will take place on December 7 - 8, 2024, and replaces the FT Roundup that ran from 2018 - 2023. This new contest uses the standard FT* exchange of grid square and signal report. Because the exchange is identical, contesters and non-contesters can contact any station they decode without concern of whether they are "in the contest" or not.

The scoring is distance-based which is similar to the World Wide Digi DX Contest where one base QSO point is earned for each contact, and distance points are added for each 3,000 kilometers. Multipliers are 2-character grid fields, which count once per band. Stations can be contacted once per band, regardless of whether FT4 or FT8 is used.

Complete rules are posted at the FT Challenge website at www.rttycontesting.com/ft-challenge [ https://www.rttycontesting.com/ft-challenge/ ] .

Operating Tip

Many contest sponsors offer access to log check reports (LCRs), also known as UBNs. Viewing your LCR from previous events can help you improve your contest scores by seeing where most of your errors are made. The most common errors are busted call signs or inaccurate exchange information.

LCRs for ARRL sponsored events, for example, are available at contests.arrl.org/logcheckreports.php [ https://contests.arrl.org/logcheckreports.php ] . The reports for ARRL events well be sent to the email address provided upon log submission.

That's all for this time. Remember to send contesting-related stories, book reviews, tips, techniques, press releases, errata, schematics, club information, pictures, stories, blog links, and predictions to contest-update@arrl.org [ mailto:contest-update@arrl.org ] .
