It had nothing to do with the competitions. After winning the Clickburn he returned to Moscow to complete his studies with Stanislav Neuhaus. It is a little known detail that Lupu competed in the Clickburn and the Leeds as a de facto Russian pianist. The Romanian government did not like him and did not promote him until he could no longer be ignored. The "official" great local pianistic talent was Dan Grigore, who waas Mme Muzicescu's pet student. Cheers!
