The chemistry seems more important in this case.

Did you (Carol) use non-metallic cooking utensils &c?

If not, I suggest plastic / ceramic / glassware just for a
test to see if the taste is subjectively repeatable.
(Use non-metallic flatware as well.)

Note: Because of the acid, do not use uranium glassware.
