Let say things are changing. Linux is still very far from well sprayed
on desktops, but the percentages changes a lot of things. Oracle wasn't
considering Linux to deploy his database before 2000, it had to adapt.
For nvidia, it's a little bit different, but the global thing is the
same. Between 2000 and 2010, having a nvidia card was the only way for a
Linux user to have a good graphical card up to date working effectively.
Now, you can always have a graphical modern graphical card running on
your computer, nvidia or not, but nvidia is the only one who comes with
proprietary drivers. And since Linus TORVALDS well known finger toward
nvidia, nvidia changed their behavior. In a more or less (depending on
the distros) future, the things should run more and more smoothly.
