Fidonet demands realnames.  That really looks like a no-go to me now.

And using only FTS standard stuff to build a network with different
rules would be doable, but wouldn't help much because of its kinda
exotic standards which don't fit well into the stuff we run today.

Distributions based on the RFC822 message format fit better into today's
infrastructure, so just install NNTP servers which are not joining
Usenet and mesh them up with peers you like.

Or think about using public IMAP folders, mailing lists, ... IMO lots of
stuff looks easier than Fidonet today.
