My dictionary ("Langenscheidts Handwörterbuch Englisch-Deutsch") translates mandatory to obligatorisch, verbindlich, zwangsweise (obligatory, binding, compulsory). Actually, we have a kind of even inferior bike lanes in Germany, nowadays called "Schutzstreifen*)" (protective stripe?), which still are mandatory for cyclists, but may be used by motorized traffic, if a driver sees a need for using that space. Most Schmutzstreifen ("dirt line", cyclist slang) are narrower than the one shown by Wikpedia, even some sidelining parking stripes. Most Sch(m)utzstreifen ("dirt lane", cyclist slang) are narrower than the one shown on Wikpedia, even those right next to parking lanes. <https://www.mystrobl.de/Plone/radfahren/fahrten/radwege/dreckwege/IMG-4316.jpeg> (a picture from my former commute). *) <https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radverkehrsanlage#Schutzstreifen> -- Wir danken für die Beachtung aller Sicherheitsbestimmungen
