I'm of mixed opinions about stealth games. Some I like, some I don't.
Overall, I tend to go for games that allow a more boisterous approach,
but neither do I avoid stealth titles entirely.

I quite enjoyed the early "Splinter Cell" games, for instance, but I
never got the hang of the first two "Thief" titles. Quite
controversially, I liked "Thief 3" most of all that franchise, just
because it's stealth mechanics felt most natural to me. I almost
inevitably end up playing a "stealth archer" in Bethesda RPGs (be it
"Fallout 3" or "Skyrim"), and if I play "Hitman", I always try to get
in and out as a silent assassin.

I think the biggest qualifier as to whether I find a stealth game
enjoyable or not is if the stealth is largely optional, or if it's the
goal of the game. In games like "Skyrim", going in loud and proud is
considered just as feasible as shooting the enemy in the back, and the
game adjusts to your playstyle. But other games --especially those
early "Thief" titles-- could be quite punishing if you broke cover. I
always preferred the first type, where I could CHOSE to stealth but
wasn't required to do it. Having it be a choice was the important part
for me.

It's one of the reasons I don't hold the "No One Lives Forever" games
in quite as high regard as do many others. I remember too many levels
where stealth was forced on me in that game.
