He was doing so long after Rowling's anti-trans views were known. There's probably more people in the US who still believe in the 'Satanic Panic' than use of Usenet worldwide. There's a lot of very backwards people there. (the US, that is, and not Usenet. Although maybe Usenet too ;-)
