This was happening in the heat of racing and you couldn't afford to miss a shift. And it was only a glance. Eddy Merckx raced with shifters and supposedly someone asked him if he ever missed a shift and he replied "I haven't missed a shift since I was 12 years old". -- Cheers, John B.
