Not only that, but it's an incredibly saturated market, where there's
not a lot being done that hasn't been seen before.  Advancements in
game engines and tools plateaued, so with everyone becoming proficient
with the same development tools and ending up with very similar
results, a lot of the creative edge that was involved in game
development starting from arcades through maybe the early 2000s is
gone.

Some occasional gems emerge now and then, and there are definitely
some entertaining games still being produced.  Just like there is
still good music being produced -- it's just a lot harder to find than
it used to be due to the side effects of a saturated market.  

So, to paritipate and still enjoy it you have to become a hunter of
diamonds in the rough.
