I understand you share his disdain for riding in bicycle specific
infrastructure, but it seems to me that such infrastructure has been
instrunmental in increasing the numbers of bicyclists.

For what it's worth, I've done my share of riding on streets and
roads, and did just fine without his advice on how to do it.
