I once decided that my kids should memorize  the "times tables" that
most housewives know, 10 eggs priced at 12 cents a dozen... 

And after being threatened with "death and destruction" (no money for
the Saturday Movies) they did memorize them. One day at school the
oldest boy casually said to the teacher something like "well 7 for,
one so... 6 x 7 is 42". The teacher sent me a letter almost literally
demanding that I stop trying to teach my kids as I wasn't a trained
teacher.... My wife refused to let me attend the parent-teacher
meetings. :-)
