You set a certain reference point in time and measure the delay between that event and some other event. This measure is often called 'time'. Time includes also dates. Like today is the 18th of march 2024. This is a certain number of days past an event called 'birth of Christ'. To the days we add hours, minutes and seconds (and occasionally fractions of seconds) and call that 'time'. But this time has nothing to do with sun-dials, because Christ was not born 24 times on a single day. TH
