I don't know from a consumer standpoint although there always was a market 
for vans and station wagons for soccer moms.

From a manufacturer's standpoint, thank the government. Tight fleet 
mileage restrictions were placed on passenger cars but the rules for light 
trucks were much more lenient. Put a more refined body on a F150 chassis, 
and it still falls into the light truck category.
