The Register article is 20 years old but even then they figured the 
average used would be hosed before they could run the updates.

My old XP netbook is now a happy Lubuntu machine. The only complication 
was using a Panda USB wifi dongle to get on the net so I could install the 
necessary Broadcomm drivers.
