There's been that discontent since the Tea Party days that the GOP doesn't have anything to offer and the Democrats are completely off the rails. Trump is the none-of-the-above answer to the usual selection of GOP hacks. Unfortunately he was a major disappointment in office but he's still talking a good game. There is also the good old American love of the underdog.
