The anti-Federalists had a good idea of how it was going to play out. Don't forget it took ten amendments before it was ratified. Adams was a Federalist and while the party didn't last long the Marshall court he created set the precedent for the federal government to stick their nose into everything under the commerce clause. As Lysander Spooner said the constitution was either powerless to prevent what the government became or was designed to create it. As soon as 'the united states' became 'The United States' it was all over.
