I'm sure the Rainbow Girls, the Mason's equivalent of DeMolay for girls, 
is overjoyed by the new usage.

Back in the '70s a friend had colored laces in his sneakers. I don't think 
the color had any particular meaning. When his mother saw them she 
exclaimed 'Oh, what gay laces!'. We cringed since the meaning had already 
been subverted 50 years ago. 

I don't care that much for old school liberals let alone the modern 
variant but then I'm not convinced that the 'Enlightenment' was a good 
thing.
