When I was a kid I could walk down the street to the local pharmacy and buy potassium nitrate and flowers of sulfur. The pharmacist probably knew what I was up to but kids were expected to blow things up back then. I could also get iodine crystals for my nitrogen triiodide experiments. It's too unstable to be very useful but it does make a nifty purple cloud when it blows. I only remember one kid getting injured and that was from the low rent activity of stuffing match heads into a CO2 capsule. Darwinian selection at work.
