I, on the other hand, have just seen the TV series, not the movies,
and have not read the 2 books. I'm curious how the movies stood up on
their own; at least one was supposed to be a direct sequel to the
TV series.

The TV series was quite good; I'm a bit surprised at James's reaction
to the novel. Perhaps it is the translation, though there are reports
that the novel and the TV series are not consistent with each other.
The novel won a notable award (Grand Prize at the 5th Annual Kyoto Animation
Festival), though there is the question of how it won the award in
March 2014 when the novel was first published in December 2015.
