The machine itself was 64-bit but our legacy code was 32-bit, as was Esri's ArcObjects. I think Ubuntu 18.04 was the last release where you had a prayer of finding 32-bit Motif libraries and others. It's all fine to pass the 32-bit flag to gcc but if you can't link the libs you're done.
