Absolutely my “cheap” old school bike still cost 700 ish? Can’t remember
certainly quite a bit less than 1k even with changing the stock
Saddle/tyres adding a pannier rack and a mount for the lights I use, I also
had a spare pannier and GPS mounts which I could just use but clearly would
cost if one didn’t have them.

I’d note that is as I’m sure your aware a point at which bikes have parts
made of cheese, even though the old school bike has comparatively gentle
life, it will clock up the miles.

Doesn’t need to be expensive far from it but stuff like Sora is durable,
and will soak up the miles in my experience.
