FWIW, my Linux workstation talks to the 40" monitor with DisplayPort (full size), which drives the built-in speakers in the monitor just fine. I'm not sure where the rumor came from that DP doesn't carry sound, but it does -- though you might have to select the specific port in pavucontrol.
