The big difference between USA and RoW for mobile phone based messaging 
is "receiver pays" vs "sender pays", I suspect a lot of other 
differences flow from that, I know it's your hobby-horse (and that's 
fine) but I don't think SMS is as dead as you say all the time, and I 
don't think it should die.
