Well, ok, Luther was 'Lutheran' from birth.

But at that time there was no such church called 'Lutherans' to which 
Luther himself could possibly convert.

As far as this is known, he remained a true believer in what was 
Christianity in that era.

He actually didn't want to leave the catholic church, but wanted to 
reform that church.

Actually he did just that, but the Pope didn't like his reforms. 
Therefore Luther got kicked out of the Catholic church.

But that didn't change his believes or made him a protestant.
