Trump planned that attack as an attempt to both appease Putin and to possibly see Zelensky give in. Though anyone that had been paying attention would have known that such an attempt to bully Zelensky would fail. Hell, we know it was planned given the press was there. Not the typical American press, but yet the Russian press made it in. It may have been planned to give Trump a reason to refuse to give the Ukraine any further aid. Though given the response from Europe the plan to make Ukraine give in to Russia's demands may have failed.
