Tom, how would my ability to write commercial software have any effect
on your inability to understand even the basics of version control
software?  I could be a great or a horrible programmer, and you would
still would not know the first thing about version control software.

Agreed.  In 2019, I was asked to help write or edit a technical book.
In the past, I edited one SCO Unix books and this seemed like more of
the same.  When I received my instructions, the first step was to
install and familiarize myself with how Git works.  They were using
Git for organizing a book, which might have a dozen authors and
possibly a similar number of editors.  Using version control for
writing a book seems to be quite common:

Fortunately, I declined the invitation, mostly because I was
recovering from laser lithotripsy surgery at the time.
